In the Battle of Leuctra of 371 BC, Spartans fought the army of Thebes, which was led by Epaminondas - the great military general and tactician who defeated the Spartans through his novel and clever use of his elite fighting unit - The Sacred Band. It is believed that the Sacred Band of Thebes comprised of 300 men who were the best and most well trained fighters in all of Theban army.
